Forest Of Trees Tutorial .... and CANDY!!

Hi all! It's day two of the fabulous release from Flourishes. THIS set was just released last night. It's called Forest of Trees and I wanted to share a technique I just learned to give this tree the look of fall! A friend, Sheila Barthel, who is a Stampin' Up demonstrator here in little 'ole Billings, Montana showed it to me recently and I'd never seen it before!

Oh well.... let's get started! :-)

1. Start by cutting out a circle image with your Nesties and leave the die on your shape! Stamp your tree using a very light brown shade.
2. Using chalks, apply colors randomly on the branches and at the base to give the tree an autumnal feel! Don't worry if it looks ugly--- it's supposed to right now!
3. Using your Nesties die as a mask, sponge on 2 different shades of Distress ink or an ink in a light and deeper tan. I used Antique Linen and Tea Dye. Take off your Nestie and see the "frame" it created!
4. Now, because Flourishes' sets are clear, you can see your stamped image through the clear stamp. Using a dark brown ink (I used Versafine Sepia), line up your stamp and stamp directly over the tree that you stamped in a light brown. What does this do? It defines your tree and helps the chalked part to peek through without dominating the image! Too cool!
And, here's a look at my finished card!
I got a lot of comments/emails from folks saying they LOVED the new Birds And Vine set from Flourishes. Here's a look at the set again....

Well, how would you like to win the set? In honor of Sharon Johnson's one year Blogoversary - the fabulous Flourishes have donated the set for one lucky winner here! I am also going to throw in some beautiful May Arts ribbon and a Basic Grey paper pack too! All you need to do is leave a comment telling me your favorite thing about fall! And click HERE to find out all the other fun giveaways going on for Sharon's 1 year blogoversary! There are 15 different candy giveaways all this week and you can enter for each and every one!

What a gorgeous technique. I never would have thought to leave my nesties die on as a mask. Duh! I live in Florida and we really don't have a fall. We pretend we do, though. We decorate with fall leaves and colors and you can find pumpkin patch sales set up on church and school lawns to raise money. In reality our sizzling hot weather just cools down a bit and we have a small drop in humidty. Our leaves do not change color but acutally just fall off the trees in January. So, with that said I would say my favorite thing about fall is my memory of fall leaves, planning for Halloween treats and Thanksgiving

Penny said...

Great technique! Looks very cool :)

ooooohhhh, a tutorial!!!! Awesome card Julie and I do love that set. Autumn happens to be my favorite time of the year. I live in a valley and when the trees turn colors I am surrounded by the beauty of orange, rust and yellow leaves everywhere. I am also surrounded by pumpkin farms. So I can drive along and see pumpkins everywhere, not to mention fields of huge sunflowers! A nearby Town is widely known for its pumpkin people. Everywhere, businesses and residents decorate their property's with themed pumpkin people. One year some one did their property like the Wizard of Oz. UNBELIEVABLE! Autumn, I wish it could be Autumn all year long. Sorry for the rambling

All of the above! We recently moved to NC from NY and right now the absolutely most favorite thing about Fall is that it is finally under 90 degrees F at some point during the day/evening!! LOL

My favorite thing about Fall is raking the leaves into a big pile and watching my daughter jump into them. She has so much fun (more fun than I have raking them up over and over again!!) My least favorite thing about Fall is that snow will be coming shortly after which means lots and lots of shoveling :(

My favorite thing about Fall is the smell. I absolutely love the beautiful smells of the leaves, trees, etc. I also love the weather!!

Hi Julie - thank you for the tutorial - I love your card and I appreciate knowing how to do that technique for myself. When my children were little, we used to go to the park often and in autumn we would each gather up our own large pile of dry fallen leaves and then we would have the biggest leaf fight! It was such fun. At 20 and 17 they think they are far too old for that now, but I'm not too old, so I just borrow my niece and nephews, or my neighbour's children and take them instead!

Fall has always been the best to me because my birthday *falls* on the autumn equinox. Now, I will have my son's birthday to celebrate just 5 days later! I also love the crispness in the air that is perfect for curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a book, a blanket on your lap out on the porch. Crisp and cool but still lovely out. I love how your tree turned out... great technique! The colors are perfect, too.

Autumn is the season that most tantalizes the senses. The smells: burning or fallen leaves, roasted marshmallows, pumpkin pie and more. The sights: trees all dressed up for a party, children dressed for fantasy fun. The feel: crisp air, crunchy leaves beneath our feet, warm flannel. The sounds: geese headed south, swirling leaves, football cheers. Yes even the "sixth sense" comes more alive as we put out our feelers in preparation for Winter's Christmas giving.

Ah, fall; it’s the most wonderful time of the year!

BTW< I LOVE TREES AND BIRDS! What a fantabulous set!

I love Fall. Your senses really come alive with the colors and sounds and smells of the season. I love digging out my sweaters and jackets and being about to bake again without heating up the house and making more hearty meals. I seem to have more energy also. I can hardly wait to decorate the house next week in Fall colors!

That was a great tutorial. I need to venture out more and try this technique more often....very warm and subtle. I always fear the 'ugly' look....I need to be more brave! Thanks for the chance to win this set.

Thanks for the inspiration.

While I will be honest and say that I generally so not enjoy the fall the one thing I do love about it is the beautiful colors the leaves turn during this time. The only downfall is that you then have to rake them! haha

Fall... I'll be simple here and say that I love the traditional. The change of color, spiced cider, pumpkin bread.

That is a beautiful technique. My favorite thing about fall is taking a drive through the beautiful Rocky Mountains and listening to the elk announcing their presence as they begin the height of thier mating season. Such a beautiful setting with the changing aspen trees all over the place, the mountains are just alive with color. It is God's finest work.

Thank you for sharing that tutorial! It's gorgeous. I don't get to see leaves turning in my part of the country, but the weather cools down so nicely. My MIL visited for Thanksgiving a couple of years ago and we ate out under our gazebo. My favorite thing it is finally cold and crisp enough to bring a flush to the cheeks and a spring to your step.

Lori A. said...

That's a very cool technique! It would probably work okay with wood mounted stamp and a stamp-a-ma-jig, too. I love fall because it means it will finally start to cool down here in Texas!

I like the fall of the year because it means cooler weather with beautiful colors meaning winter will follow. Here in LA. we don't get a very long fall but just a little drop in temp is wonderful. I love your card and tutorial on chalking the tree. Thanks for the opportunity to win this set.

Another beautiful card and such a simple technique. My favorite thing about Fall is the cooler temperatures and beautiful colors. Living in hot central Texas, we don't get much color change, but the cooler temps are definitely welcome. I'd love to win the new set. It's gorgeous.

Beautiful! Love the tip on masking with the Nesties. Fall is my favorite season for a variety of reasons - namely, the glorious colors that are evident in the mountains around me. Accompanied with the brisk air, it's a joy to walk among leaves and hear/feel them crunch underneath. Thanks for the opportunity to enter!

Beautiful card! Thanks for the tutorial.

My favorite thing(s) about fall are the crisp air, the changing colors, and taking my boys to the pumpkin patch. There's one by our house with a playground, petting zoo, corn maze, hay rides, AND a pumpkin patch. He just loves it so of course I do too.

Oh, and I NEED those bird stamps!
